    Further identification and treatment modalities in telephone mediated lightning strike

    The results are presented of a prospective survey of people injured by lightning impulses transmitted by the public telephone system. The results are compared with those of a previous retrospective survey. Various deficiencies in the methodology of the latter survey are addressed. A division into a population with severe injury and a population with mild injury is made based on medical history and examination taken immediately after a strike. The best predictors of severe injury were found to be the presence of symptoms beyond one week after the strike, and also the initial presence of musculoskeletal injuries. Psychological upset is also seen to be a significant factor in severe injury. The only physical parameter of strike which could be used as a predictor of severe injury was the presence of concomitant power system damage. The importance of earth bonding between power and telephone system is thus supported in a protection strategy. One author draws on experience in treating patients with these injuries to propose a treatment regimen for those with ongoing symptoms. The importance of evaluating and treating psychological and physical aspects is stressed

    The QT interval in lightning injury with implications for the cessation of metabolism hypothesis

    An hypothesis is presented to provide an alternative to the Cessation of Metabolism hypothesis often invoked in lightning injury. Cessation of Metabolism has been proposed to explain the observation of good recovery after a prolonged period in cardiac arrest in some lightning injured patients. Reevaluation of EEGs from lightning injured patients show a high incidence of QT prolongation. Reexamination of the cases used to support Cessation of Metabolism also reveals little evidence to justify the hypothesis. The finding of QT prolongation coupled with the hyperadrenergic state said to exist in lightning injury, may promote a state of episodic induction of and recovery from Torsade de Pointes Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). Histological examination of the myocardium supports the new hypothesis. This the first concerted description of lightning injury as one of the general causes of QT prolongation. It appears to occur frequently after lightning injury, is a prerequisite of and predisposes to episodes of Torsade de Pointes VT. These electrocardiographic abnormalities explain Cessation of Metabolism and recognition may change management and lead to greater survival

    Marketers’ Use Of Alternative Front-Of-Package Nutrition Symbols: An Examination Of Effects On Product Evaluations

    How front-of-package (FOP) nutrition icon systems affect product evaluations for more and less healthful objective nutrition profiles is a critical question facing food marketers, consumers, and the public health community. We propose a conceptually-based hierarchical continuum to guide predictions regarding the effectiveness of several FOP systems currently used in the marketplace. In Studies 1a and 1b, we compare the effects of a broad set of FOP icons on nutrition evaluations linked to health, accuracy of evaluations, and purchase intentions for a single product. Based on these findings, Studies 2 and 3 test the effects of two conceptually-different FOP icon systems in a retail laboratory in which consumers make comparative evaluations of multiple products at the retail shelf. While there are favorable effects of each system beyond control conditions with no FOP icons, results show that icons with an evaluative component that aid consumers’ interpretations generally provide greater benefits (particularly in product comparison contexts). We offer implications for consumer packaged goods marketers, retailers, and the public policy and consumer health communities

    An Improved Heteroskedasticity and Autocorrelation Consistent Covariance Matrix Estimator

    This paper considers a new class of heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent (HAC) covariance matrix estimators. The estimators considered are prewhitened kernel estimators with vetor autoregressions employed in the prewhitening stage. The paper establishes consistency, rate of convergence, and asymptotic truncated mean squared error (MSE) results for the estimators when a fixed or automatic bandwidth procedure is employed. Conditions are obtained under which prewhitening improves asymptotic truncated MSE. Monte Carlo results show that prewhitening is very effective in reducing bias, improving confidence interval coverage probabilities, and rescuing over-rejection of t -statistics constructed using kernel-HAC estimators. On the other hand, prewhitening is found to inflate variance and MSE of the kernel estimators. Since confidence interval coverage probabilities and over-rejection of t-statistics are usually of primary concern, prewhitened kernel estimators provide a significant improvement over the standard non-prewhitened kernel estimators

    Systematic genetic array analysis links the Saccharomyces cerevisiae SAGA/SLIK and NuA4 component Tra1 to multiple cellular processes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tra1 is an essential 437-kDa component of the <it>Saccharomyces cerevisiae </it>SAGA/SLIK and NuA4 histone acetyltransferase complexes. It is a member of a group of key signaling molecules that share a carboxyl-terminal domain related to phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase but unlike many family members, it lacks kinase activity. To identify genetic interactions for <it>TRA1 </it>and provide insight into its function we have performed a systematic genetic array analysis (SGA) on <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413</sub>, an allele that is defective in transcriptional regulation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The SGA analysis revealed 114 synthetic slow growth/lethal (SSL) interactions for <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413</sub>. The interacting genes are involved in a range of cellular processes including gene expression, mitochondrial function, and membrane sorting/protein trafficking. In addition many of the genes have roles in the cellular response to stress. A hierarchal cluster analysis revealed that the pattern of SSL interactions for <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413 </sub>most closely resembles deletions of a group of regulatory GTPases required for membrane sorting/protein trafficking. Consistent with a role for Tra1 in cellular stress, the <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413 </sub>strain was sensitive to rapamycin. In addition, calcofluor white sensitivity of the strain was enhanced by the protein kinase inhibitor staurosporine, a phenotype shared with the Ada components of the SAGA/SLIK complex. Through analysis of a GFP-Tra1 fusion we show that Tra1 is principally localized to the nucleus.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have demonstrated a genetic association of Tra1 with nuclear, mitochondrial and membrane processes. The identity of the SSL genes also connects Tra1 with cellular stress, a result confirmed by the sensitivity of the <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413 </sub>strain to a variety of stress conditions. Based upon the nuclear localization of GFP-Tra1 and the finding that deletion of the Ada components of the SAGA complex result in similar phenotypes as <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413</sub>, we suggest that the effects of <it>tra1</it><sub><it>SRR</it>3413 </sub>are mediated, at least in part, through its role in the SAGA complex.</p

    Organizational Memory: An AIAA Investigation

    The AIAA OM project is an attempt to investigate the magnitude and consequences of the organizational memory problem in aerospace. By uncovering promising projects that were left in the oral tradition, we hope to shed light in the issue of how to transfer the experience of the 26% of people retiring in the next few years to those entering the field. The results of the project are that about 20% of our sample of 93 had a story that they wanted to tell. Nearly all of them declined to do so because it involved proprietary or classified information. Only 5% felt at liberty to speak to an AIAA student group about promising leads for the future. This team offers recommendations to the AIAA about how to mitigate the problems we faced in gathering this information

    Targeted modeling of GW150914's binary black hole source with dart_board

    We present a new method to extract statistical constraints on the progenitor properties and formation channels of individual gravitational-wave sources. Although many different models have been proposed to explain the formation of the binary black holes detected by the LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaboration (LVC), formation through isolated binary evolution remains the best explored scenario. Under the assumption that these binary systems have been formed through binary evolution, we use the statistical wrapper dart_board coupled with the rapid binary evolution code COSMIC to model GW150914, the first gravitational-wave signal detected by the LVC. Our procedure is a Bayesian method that combines the likelihood function generated from the gravitational-wave signal with a prior distribution describing the population of stellar binaries and the star-formation and metallicity evolution of the Universe. In this example case, we find that the dominant evolutionary channel for GW150914 did not involve any common-envelope phase, but instead the system most probably formed through stable mass transfer. This result is robust against variations of various model parameters, and it is reversed only when dynamical instability in binaries becomes more likely when a strict condition favoring common envelopes is adopted. Our analysis additionally provides a quantitative description of the progenitors relevant to each channel.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, submitted to AAS Journal
